The familiarity/recollection distinction does not illuminate medial temporal lobe function: response to Montaldi and Mayes.

چکیده
modified source procedure of Kirwan et al. [6] and Wais et al. [7] because source memory is neither necessary nor sufficient for recollection, so the presence of recollection cannot be reliably determined. Therefore, a safe interpretation of these results is not possible. However, if the most confident level of familiarity supports recognition as accurately as that supported by recollection and making the two kinds of judgement is equally rapid, then the strength confound has been avoided. We have argued [3] that in the only published study in which this has been done successfully [8], we found that recollection activated the hippocampus significantly more than strength-matched scene familiarity, whereas familiarity of different strengthsmodulated perirhinal cortex activity but had no differential effect on the hippocampus. The only plausible explanation of this finding is that the hippocampus selectivelymediates recollection, so it is incorrect to claim that nearly all studies controlling for the strength confound indicate that the hippocampus mediates familiarity as well as recollection. However, it remains to be explored to what extent this selectivity is stimulus-dependent.

Material Specificity Drives Medial Temporal Lobe Familiarity But Not Hippocampal Recollection
The specific role of the perirhinal (PRC), entorhinal (ERC) and parahippocampal cortices (PHC) in supporting familiarity-based recognition remains unknown. An fMRI study explored whether these medial temporal lobe (MTL) structures responded in the same way or differentially to familiarity as a function of stimulus type at recognition. A secondary aim was to explore whether the hippocampus respo...

Associative recognition and recall depend on structures in the medial temporal lobes (MTLs). There is disagreement about whether associative memory is functionally heterogeneous, whether it is functionally distinct from intra-item associative memory and how the MTLs contribute to this kind of memory. Despite an increase in research on associative memory, work has lacked a theoretical framework ...

The ability to recognize a previously experienced stimulus is supported by two processes: recollection of the stimulus in the context of other information associated with the experience, and a sense of familiarity with the features of the stimulus. Although familiarity and recollection are functionally distinct, there is considerable debate about how these kinds of memory are supported by regio...
متن کاملThe role of the human hippocampus in familiarity-based and recollection-based recognition memory.
The ability to recognize a previously encountered stimulus is dependent on the structures of the medial temporal lobe and is thought to be supported by two processes, recollection and familiarity. A focus of research in recent years concerns the extent to which these two processes depend on the hippocampus and on the other structures of the medial temporal lobe. One view holds that the hippocam...

Neuroimaging and lesion studies have seemed to converge on the idea that the hippocampus selectively supports recollection. However, these studies usually involve a comparison between strong recollection-based memories and weak familiarity-based memories. Studies that avoid confounding memory strength with recollection and familiarity almost always find that the hippocampus supports both recoll...
